The Anti-Slavery Movement in Black & White
Program at the Princeville Heritage Museum

The Princeville Heritage Museum in conjunction with the Lillie M. Evans Library will be presenting the final program in our Lincoln series entitled, the Anti-Slavery Movement in Black & White by Jeanne Schultz Angel.  This free program will be held at the Museum on Tuesday, April 29th 6:30pm.  The state of Illinois played a prominent role during the anti-slavery movement in the mid-19th Century. But were all Illinoisans who were against slavery also supportive of the Underground Railroad, or even racial equality? Understanding the differences between those who were 'anti-slavery' and those who were 'radical abolitionists' is important to both understanding how the Underground Railroad was viewed in Illinois, and also determining which of its sites are verifiable. Explore the history behind the anti-slavery movement in Northern Illinois and examine the criteria historians use to separate fact from fiction.

This program is provided through a grant from the IHC Road Scholars Speakers Bureau. The Illinois Humanities Council (IHC) is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Illinois General Assembly (through the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency), as well as by contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations.  Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed by speakers, program participants, or audiences do not necessarily reflect those of the NEH, the IHC, our partnering organizations or our funders.

The exhibit will be on display at the Princeville Heritage Museum from April 7, 2014 through May 9, 2014.  Regular hours at the Princeville Heritage Museum during this exhibit will be Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays 10am-2pm; Tuesdays from 2pm-8pm; and Thursdays from 2pm-6pm.  The exhibit is closed on Sundays.  There is no charge for admission.  The Museum is located 325 N Ostrom Avenue in Princeville, IL-15 minutes north of Peoria.  The 30,000 sq ft handicap-accessible facility features agriculture antiques, area artifacts, genealogy research, and more. The Akron Townhouse School, a one-room school, is located on the Museum grounds.  For more information and for booking class or group visits, please call the Museum (309) 385-1916.

Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War is a traveling exhibition for libraries and was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs office.  The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Lincoln:  the Constitution and the Civil War is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center.
