Celebrate World Book Night in Princeville
Tuesday, April 23
|
Celebrate World Book Night in Princeville on Tuesday, April 23, 2013!
In honor of World Book Night on April 23rd, several local community members will be distributing books in Princeville. Tina Fey's Bossypants will be given away at the softball field (game at 4:30) and the large print version of Favorite American Poems will be distributed at Princeville Women's Club Meeting. James Patterson's Middle School, the Worst Years of My Life will be given out at the grade school.
What is World Book Night? In the U.S., a half million free books will be handed out in towns and cities across America all on one day-April 23, 2013-by enlisting 25,000 volunteer book
lovers to help promote reading by going into their communities and personally handing out specially printed copies to light or non--readers and to those without the means or access to printed books.
How did it start? World Book Night was first celebrated in the USA in 2012. What better way to spread a love for reading than to inspire passionate readers to go out into their communities and share copies of their favorite books with those who don't regularly read? Giving is an incredibly powerful part of our culture-and culture, art, and a writers' talent are all themselves 'gifts'. Last year, almost 80,000 people gave out over 2.5 million books in four different countries.
How does it work? Each year, 30 books are chosen by an independent panel of librarians and booksellers. The authors of the books waive their royalties and the publishers agree to pay the costs of producing the specially-printed World Book Night U.S. editions. Bookstores and libraries sign up to be community host locations for the volunteer book givers. After the book titles are announced, members of the public apply to personally hand out 20 copies of a particular title in their community. On April 23rd, they give their books to those who don't regularly read and/or people who don't normally have access to printed books, for reasons of means or access.
Why does World Book Night exist? Reading for pleasure improves literacy, actively engaging emerging readers in their desire to read. Reading changes lives, improves employability, social interaction, enfranchisement, and can have a positive effect on mental health and happiness. Book readers are more likely to participate in positive activities such as volunteering, attending cultural events, and even physical exercise ("Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America," National Endowment for the Arts).

HERE'S THE DIRT By Anne Abbey
MAY MEETING DATE CHANGE!!
May 7, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.
April 4, 2013
The April meeting of the Princeville Garden Club began at 7:00 p.m. in Lillie M. Evans Library. Jerry Whitledge (309/303-4225) was our speaker on Prairie Grasses. Mr Whitledge stated that in order to start a prairie grass area, you need to start by either placing black plastic, paper and mulch or round-up the area in order to clear the ground. (do not till) If planting seeds, the area should be mowed and raked several times during the growing season. This helps plants establish deep roots. After plants are established, burn every 2-3 years, if possible. Planting established plants is possible, but expensive. It is important to keep established plant area weed free the first year.! An excellent source of additional info is www.inhs.uiuc.edu/~kenr/home.htmll. Also, Illinois Wildflowers by Don Kurz and Tallgrass Restoration Handbook. How do you to tell a weed, their leaves are smooth!
Our hostesses for the evening were Helen Gualandi and Ruthie Whitledge. The first glass of sun tea for the season was refreshing!
TREASURER'S REPORT - Cathie Maguire reported no deposits or expenses.
OLD BUSINESS - At the last meeting it was recommend we hold a plant sale again this year, but without library hostas. The date for the Sale is May 18 from 8:00 a.m. to noon in Stevens Park. Martha Macy will chair the event and prepare flyers for distribution. Judy Sutherland will handle advertising. Members wishing to divide their hostas, reduce their number of pots or garden art and/or sharing your excess plants will be welcome.
May 13 at 6:00 p.m. was chosen as the time and date to spruce up the park gardens in advance of our Plant Sale. They seem to be in pretty good shape, just some beautification.
NEW BUSINESS - There was discussion regarding Princeville's student needs. At this time plans for a gift to the school for supplies was delayed until fall.
DOOR PRIZE - Our door prize of a plaque/stepping stone from EB Builders was won by Cathie Maguire. The message on the stone was excellent.
MAY MEETING - The May meeting will be held May 7, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the Picket Fence in Chillicothe . Stephanie will be letting us know "What's New". Please bring your lawn chair.
The hostesses will be Joann Cunningham and Diane Ingle.
Guests are always welcome.
THOUGHT OF THE MONTH - "The seasons are what a symphony ought to be: four perfect movements in harmony with each other." Arthur Rubinstein

This includes televisions, monitors, printers, scanners, computers, keyboards, mice, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, cell phones and much more. Locally, you have options to recycle your electronics including Eagle Recycling, 510 SE Industrial Ave., Galva and Goodwill Industries in Peoria. For more information:
